South Bend Tribune: New Charter School Opens Soon in South Bend

The South Bend Tribune reports on the preparations for the opening of the new charter school in South Bend, Xavier School of Excellence.  Excerpt:
 

Each wall has a fresh, soft color — nothing is sterile white — here in the area's brand new charter school, where students in preschool through the fifth grade begin classes Aug. 24.

Contractors are still crawling all over the nearly ready Xavier School of Excellence. Furniture is on the way. The 60 laptop computers will be a crowning touch, tapping into the school's Wi-Fi Internet link.

The newness calls to mind what board President Yolanda Turner-Smith often says: "When you engage a child, they're less likely to tear it up."

This school, at 3423 S. Michigan St., aims to engage the public, too. Board members invite folks to invest talents, sweat and ideas.
