St. Joseph County TEA Party Media Coverage
On Tax Day 2009, concerned citizens demonstrated against government irresponsibility at the St. Joseph County Court House. Dan Herbster addressed the crowd.
Hundreds gathered to protest reckless spending, oppressive tax policies, encroachments on the free enterprise system, loss of liberty, and the mortgaging of our children's futures by our government. The South Bend Tribune reported on the local demonstration. Read article here. Excerpt:
“We care about the country that our children and grandchildren will inherit one day,” said Dan Herbster, who ran for the state House in 2007. “They’re in danger of running out of our money. Notice I said our money.”
The event attracted a large crowd that overflowed onto the street at times.
Also, WNDU also reported on the TEA Parties here and here.
The Tribune also reported the following:
St. Joseph County Republican Party Chairman Chris Riley said he hopes the event promotes Republican principles of self-sufficiency.
"The tax party is directing attention to excessive governmental spending and excessive governmental taxation," Riley said, "which gets in the way of people making investments."
But Riley's Democratic counterpart, county party Chairman Owen "Butch" Morgan, said he wanted to know where the protests were against the previous administration's spending habits.
"It rings kind of hollow," he said. "Where were they for the eight years Bush was there? I mean, really."
Riley said the party is looking to move on from the George W. Bush administration, and that Republicans were not impressed with Bush's spending habits.
It is actually the constant criticisms of George W. Bush by the likes of President Obama and St. Joe County Democrat Chairman Butch Morgan that "ring hollow." They can't have it both ways. If they really disapproved of Bush's spending why are they pushing for even more.
